Male' City Council has begun works to introduce a vehicle cap in the capital city.
The new mayor, Adam Azim, told a news conference at the city council's office today that he has decided to work with the Transport Ministry to determine a limit on the number of vehicles that can be driven in the city.
Azim said he has already held discussions with Transport Minister Mohammed Ameen and Home Minister Mohamed Ihsaan.
“We hope to determine that number within the next six months,” Azim said.
Azim said one of the biggest concerns of the people during his door-to-door campaign was the issue of garage city and parking lots. He noted that works will be carried out with the relevant authorities to find solutions to these.
Azim added that he would support anything that is done to provide a comfortable life for the people living in the city.
