Maldives Ambassador to India, Ibrahim Shaheeb, has been summoned to India's External Affairs Ministry over derogatory remarks made by Maldives Government officials towards Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Three Deputy Ministers at Youth Ministry have been suspended following their derogatory remarks towards Modi after his video promoting Lakshadweep.

An official from External Affairs Ministry told 'One' on Monday that this is standard procedure in such incidents, to summon the Ambassador to the Ministry.

The three suspended Deputy Ministers include Mariyam Shiuna, Malsha Shareef and Abdulla Mahzoom. Their suspension comes in the wake of public criticism.

In a statement issued regarding the matter, Foreign Ministry stated that freedom of speech should not lead to negative or hateful comments and the Ministry will not hesitate to take action against such individuals who incite hate.

Indian public have stated a 'Maldives Out' campaign on social media and multiple celebrities have voiced criticism towards Maldives while promoting Lakshadweep.
