The Elections Commission of the Maldives (EC) has revealed that they will announce the date for the 2024 Parliament Election this week, after discussions with opposition Maldivian Demcoratic Party.

EC Vice-President Ismail Habib told reporters at a news conference today that the EC will discuss the contents of the letter submitted by MDP tomorrow.

Habib said the EC has decided to hold discussions with the MDP at 1:00 pm tomorrow. A date for the election will be announced this week, he said.

Habib said that after talks with various parties, the decision was taken to fix the date of the election in the most convenient manner for all parties considering the challenges faced by the people, candidates and the Election Commission. The most important thing is that a large number of people will be able to vote, he said. If the election day coincides with the month of Ramadan, fewer people are likely to turn out to vote, he said.
