Foreign Ministry on Sunday issued an official statement stating that the derogatory remarks on social media platforms against foreign leaders does not represent the views of the Administration.

The statement said the opinions are personal views, referring to the criticism against Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Maldivian social media.

The statement said the Government believes freedom of expression should be exercised in a democratic and responsible manner. Foreign Ministry’s statement said criticism shouldn’t spread hatred, negativity, and hinder close relationships between Maldives and other countries.

The statement further said that relevant authorities of the Government will not hesitate to take action against those who make such derogatory remarks.
