Some government officials who criticised Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been suspended.
In a message shared by the government with media, it was stressed that government officials who had made such remarks on social media have since been suspended.
While the government has revealed that they have suspended the officials, their identities remain unclear.
Amid a strong anti-campaign against holidays in the Maldives in the name of promoting Lakshadweep in the Indian union territory, two youth ministry deputy ministers have come under fire for posts abusing Modi on X. Many are saying it is inappropriate behavior from top government officials.
The ruling coalition, the Maldives National Party (MNP), has also condemned the attack and called for action. Former Economic Minister Fayyaz Ismail and former Vice President Ahmed Adeeb have also condemned the attack.
The Foreign Ministry said in a statement that the opinion of the government officials is not the word of the government and that everyone has freedom of expression, but that freedom must be subject to certain rules. They said he would not hesitate to take action against those responsible.
Some Indians are also campaigning on social media under the name of Maldives Out.
