Civil Court has ordered former Attorney General Azima Shukoor, who is in the running for Male' City Mayorship, to pay MVR 4 million to Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB).
The Court ruling was made following the failure of repayment to MIB regarding a housing loan of MVR 3 million to acquire a flat from Platinum Residence. MIB filed a case against Azima for repayment, and the Court ruled in her absence.
According to the case filed by MIB, Azima applied for a loan of MVR 3 million and currently owes MVR 4 million to the Bank after failing to make timely payments. Civil Court ruling stated that MIB presented evidence that Azima had failed to make payments according to the payment plan on her loan.
As such, Civil Court ordered Azima to clear the payment within six months, and that the flat mortgaged as security for the loan will remain mortgaged under MIB until the payment is cleared.
The Civil Court ruling against Azima comes days ahead of the Male' City Mayorship elections due to be held on 13 January 2024.
