The Police Board has recommended Home Minister Ali Ihsan to appoint Assistant Commissioner Ali Shujau for the vacant police commissioner post.

When the application for the post of Polis Commissioner was opened, two candidates applied for the post— Ali Shujau and Assistant Commissioner of Police Ismail Navin.

The police board had recommended to the Minister to appoint Shujau as police commissioner since Naveen did not meet the criteria laid down by the board when the names of the two candidates were examined by the board.

The duties of the Police Board constituted under the Maldives Police Service Act are to do all that is necessary to ensure the appointment of a police commissioner and deputy police commissioner. In addition to the duties mentioned in Section 76 of the Act and advising the minister and those appointed in the law to advise on matters to be advised under the Act.

The post of Police Commissioner fell vacant after President Dr Mohamed Muizzu took office following the change of government. Mohamed Hameed retired from the police service on November 15, since when Farhad Fikry has been filling in as acting Police Commissioner.
