Assistant Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen and Assistant Commissioner of Police Ali Shujau have nominated themselves for the post of Police Commissioner.

The Home Ministry opened the opportunity to apply for the post of Police Commissioner on December 14th. The Home Ministry said today that the opportunity to apply for the post expired today.

The last police commissioner was Mohammed Hameed. Hameed retired from the post on 15th November. Deputy Commissioner of Police Abdul Mannan Yusuf has since been appointed as the Acting Police Commissioner. Ali Rashid was appointed as the Deputy Police Commissioner.

The two retired on 25th last month. Assistant Commissioner of Police Farhad Fikri was appointed as the Acting Police Commissioner on the same day. He is still in that position.

The Police Service Act states that if the post of Commissioner of Police becomes vacant, a person shall be appointed to the post within 45 days from that date. The President shall appoint a person to the post on the advice of the Minister from among the names submitted to the Minister by the Police Board. According to the law, a person of the rank of Assistant Commissioner of Police and above can be appointed to the post.
