The Bill seeking competition among business in the Maldives have been sent to the Parliament Committee on Economic Affairs.
The Bill submitted by Central Hithadhoo MP, Ibrahim Mohamed Didi on behalf of the government was accepted with a unanimous vote by the 49 members who were present for the Parliament session.
Speaking about the Bill, MP Ibrahim Didi said that the Bill’s main purpose was to create competition among businesses in the Maldives and to minimize the effect of an absence of competition between businesses to the Maldivian economy.
The Bill will also work on opposing business agreements that leave no room for competition in addition to eradicating any attempts to influence businesses to oppose competition. A guideline will also be developed under the Bill, minimize negative impacts of company mergers on the competition in their respective fields.
Businesses who violate the Bill are to be penalized according to the current draft.
