The Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) has opened applications for recruitment to the post of Police Commissioner.
According to a notification issued by the Ministry, only those officers in the ranks of Assistant Commissioner and above can apply for the post of Police Commissioner and therefore, those interested in applying for the post of Police Commissioner will have to submit a letter of interest to the Ministry by 12 noon on December 19.
The post of police commissioner was last held by Mohammad Hameed, who retired from the post on November 15, followed by Deputy Commissioner of Police Abdul Mannan Yusuf as acting police commissioner and Ali Rasheed as deputy police commissioner.
They retired on November 25, so assistant commissioner of police Farhad Fikri was appointed as acting police commissioner on the same day. He continues to hold the post.
The Police Service Act says that if the post of Commissioner of Police falls vacant, a new commissioner has to be appointed to the post within 45 days from that date. The appointment has to be made by the Police Board on the recommendation of the Minister on the advice of the Minister. from the rank of police to above.
At the time of his appointment as acting commissioner, Farhad was one of the seven people who were dismissed by the police board on August 10, 2021, but the civil court had ruled that Farhad had been dismissed unjustly, and the matter was now pending in the high court by the state.
