Speaker of Parliament and Hithadhoo North MP Mohamed Aslam has said that he will not obstruct any investigation conducted by the Parliament into any government.
Aslam was speaking after The Democrats MP and Vilufushi MP Hassan Afeef referred to the Speaker of Parliament during the debate on next year's budget.
Afeef said the former President Ibrahim Mohammed Solih's government has neglected Maldives' financial affairs. Afeef made serious accusations against the then Finance Minister Ibrahim Ameer.
Afeef alleged that the Finance Minister did not restructure the national debt even by the end of the term due to ulterior motives. Speaking on the incumbent President Dr Mohamed Muizzu's state budget, Afeef further claimed that the budget was ridiculous, stating that it includes funds for projects by the previous government hence the previous government should also take the blame.
Afeef said the Speaker of Parliament should look into the actions of the former Finance Minister.
Reacting to Afeef’s remarks, Speaker Aslam said the Speaker does not have the space and opportunity to participate in debates.
Therefore, the Speaker cannot disclose the budget debate as he sees fit, he said.
In addition, the Parliament Office will provide all possible support to the efforts of the members to hold the government accountable, he said.
