PPM Vice-President and current Fisheries Minister Ahmed Shiyam has said that they will look into the emergency press conference held yesterday by the steering committee allegedly appointed by former President Abdulla Yameen.
The steering committee was led by former Commissioner General of Customs Abbas Adil Riza and former Minister Mohammed Maleeh Jamal. The committee does not feature any of the prominent faces seen in the party's leadership.
At the press conference, Maleeh said the PPM can solve the problems facing the country. The PPM has been working for the sake of the country for many years and will resolve the grievances of the members, he said.
Abbas Adil Riza told the press conference that there is no reason for PPM members to leave the party and the PPM will always continue to work to bring good things to the country. President Yameen is not going to hurt the country, he said.
The PPM/PNC feud has escalated and the PNC has recently separated its office. Previously, the two parties used to run in the same office. There are also rumors that many PPM members are being taken to the PNC. Some allege that the President’s Office Senior Minister Abdul Raheem Abdullah is in charge.
When asked about the press conference, Shiyam said it was not held with the knowledge of the party leadership and the party's constitution says that such a thing can only be done with the knowledge of the party leadership.
"We are looking into it. We will take the necessary steps after that. If it is a behavioral issue, we will do it," Shiyam explained.
He added that he does not believe that this happened with the knowledge of President Yameen and if there is such a thing, he will discuss it. However, he said he would also clarify with Yameen to see if it happened with his knowledge.
