The Criminal Court has decided not to go for recess citing multiple works are pending.

The Criminal Court usually goes into recess in the middle and December of each year.

In a statement, the Court said that the team of judges has decided not to go for recess this year due to a number of pending works owing to space constraints in the Criminal Court.

The Court did not go into recess last year as well due to non-completion of work owing to space constraints.

In addition to the lack of space at the Criminal Court, the building where the Court is located is very dilapidated. Therefore, it was decided to shift some of the work of the court to Hulhumale' Phase II but work to establish the court building in Phase II has not begun.

The court observed that due to lack of space in the court, the number of cases scheduled has come down to 50 percent due to which complaints of delay in hearings and complaints from detainees have been received, adding that due to the reduction in scheduled cases, cases have increased to the backlog of the judge who is yet to complete the cases.

The last time the criminal court went to recess was in 2021 on June 27 July 10, and from December 16 to 31 that year.
