Parliament has approved the appointment of Ali Nashath as a member of the Election Commission (EC).

The parliament passed the approval of Nashath with 42 of the 58 lawmakers present at the meeting voting for his appointment, while nine voted against his nomination.

Nashath has been a member of the EC in the past as well. He was first appointed to EC on 25 July, 2018 during former president Yameen's tenure.

His term ended on July 25 this year. President Solih sent his name to parliament on May 29 this year to appoint Nashath for another term, but since then the matter has not been taken up in parliament.

Therefore, the last presidential election was conducted without the members of the EC, which included President Fuad Taufeeq, Vice President Ismail Habib Abdul Raheem, Member Dr. Mohamed Zahir and Member Mohamed Asif.
