MP Mohamed Aslam has been elected as the Speaker of the Parliament.
The post of Speaker of the Parliament fell vacant following the resignation of incumbent Mohamed Nasheed amidst heavy criticism from the MP's this evening. Nasheed attended the parliament sitting tonight as a member of the Mahchangoalhi Medhu Constituency.
MDP's Mohamed Aslam and MP Ali Azim contested for the post of speaker tonight.
Aslam, who contested as the running mate of President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih in this year's presidential election, was elected as the speaker of the parliament with 53 votes against Ali Azim's 23 votes.
