MP Mohamed Aslam and MP Ali Azim have been nominated for the post of Speaker of the Parliament.
The post of Speaker of the Parliament fell vacant following the resignation of Mohamed Nasheed this evening amidst heavy criticism by the MP's. Nasheed is attending the current session as a member of the Mahchangoalhi Medhu Constituency.
MP Mohamed Shifau proposed Aslam's name at a meeting held this evening to elect a member for the post of Speaker of the vacant parliament while MP Imthiyaz Fahmy nominated MP Ali Azim for the post.
The parliament session has been adjourned for some time until the ballot papers are ready.
A committee has been formed to conduct the elections. The five-member committee consists of MP Rozaina Adam, MP Mohamed Rasheed, MP Ibrahim Fazal Rashid, MP Ali Hussain and MP Ahmed Usham.
Nasheed's resignation comes at a time when 49 MDP lawmakers have signed and submitted a motion to remove him from the parliament.
