Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has resigned from his role as the speaker.
Nasheed has resigned after 49 MDP MPs signed a petition to remove him from the Parliament. The issue was not taken up, the parliament came to a standstill and many criticized Nasheed.
In a letter to the Secretary General of the Parliament, Fatimath Niusha, Nasheed said he had considered the current issue in the Parliament and the impact it would have on his democratic system of governance. He said the MDP, which has a majority in parliament, has committed acts that threaten the basic principles of democracy.
Nasheed said the Supreme Court judgment in this case also highlighted the horror of this and stated that the Supreme Court should not interfere in the internal affairs of Parliament except in very exceptional circumstances.
This will lead to the politicization of court judgments and political issues will turn into legal issues settled by the courts, the ruling said.
Nasheed has resigned, while the MDP today moved the impeachment of Vice-President Eva Abdullah with the signatures of 50 MPs.
