The High Court has scheduled an appeal hearing against the conviction of former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom for taking bribes and money laundering in relation to the V. Aarah case.
The Criminal Court sentenced Yameen to 11 years in prison and fined him USD 5 million. Yameen's side appealed the case to the High Court.
The President’s hearing is scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
Yameen's hearings were adjourned in the High Court and resumed on the 9th of this month.
At the last hearing, the judges questioned the two parties about the proceedings in the Criminal Court under the normal procedure. They also asked about a procedural mistake made by the Criminal Court in deciding the case.
However, the judge noted that it would not affect the sentence handed down to Yameen.
President Yameen's appeal hearings are underway. Last month, President Yameen was moved to his residence at his request after his election. He has since been allowed to go out for exercise and special occasions.
