Parliament on Monday adjourned Spek amid Speaker Mohamed Nasheed's no-confidence motion, saying it could not continue because of the loss of order in the chamber.
Two sessions of the Parliament are scheduled to be held today.
The agenda for the session at 9:00 am is the Supplementary Budget and the 2024 Budget.
Despite three attempts, the meeting could not be held due to a lack of quorum. However, Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla, who presided over the session, said she would not adjourn the session until the quorum was reached.
The second session, held at 11 am, was to continue the motion to impeach the Speaker of Parliament.
The session started with a quorum but could not be continued.
Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla said 60 members were present in the session. However, there is no system to conduct the session, she said. Members of The Democrats went to the administrative table and continued to protest. "Where's the budget?" they shouted.
Concluding the session, Eva said she would announce the time of the next session.
The motion of no confidence in the Speaker of Parliament was first agendaed for yesterday’s session after the Supreme Court ruled on Thursday that the no-confidence motion against the Speaker could not be presided over by a member other than the Deputy Speaker.
However, the parliament held a second session yesterday to agenda the matter. Eva presided over the session and adjourned the session by deciding that the no-confidence motion could not be continued as it had been dropped in the previous session.
That is why the no-confidence motion was put on the agenda today.
