Parliament secretariat has stated that MDP's motion to remove Mohamed Nasheed from the post of Speaker of the Parliament cannot be dismissed by the Chair.

Parliament's Director of Communications Hassan Ziyau told 'One' that Secretary General Fathimath Niusha has reiterated that Parliament cannot reject the motion, and that is the parliament's stand.

"The secretariat is of the view that the matter cannot be dismissed by the Chair in such a manner. That's why we have set the agenda for a second meeting," Ziyau said.

Nasheed's no-confidence motion was placed on the agenda for today's meeting after the Supreme Court's verdict on Thursday. However, MP Afeef dismissed the motion during the first sitting of the Parliament today.

Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla, who presided over the second sitting, also dismissed the motion from today's session.

MDP referred the matter to the Parliament's Ethics Committee, alleging that Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla and Villufushi MP Hassan Afeef have violated the privileges of the Parliament in connection with today's two sittings. The Committee has since decided that neither Eva nor Afeef can preside over Parliament for Nasheed's no-confidence motion.
