Election Commission (EC) Vice President Ismail Habeeb has said that ECwill respond to 65 complaints regarding the delimitation of population for next year's parliamentary constituencies.

Habeeb posted on X on Tuesday that the 65 complaints have been examined and completed and work is currently underway on the charts required to make the final report of the constituencies.

"The Election Commission has examined the complaints/suggestions received in the provisional report on the population allocation for parliamentary constituencies 2024. EC will respond to complaints/suggestions today. We are currently working on the charts that need to be done to make the final report of the constituencies," Habeeb said.

Habeeb also revealed the number of complaints filed in the constituencies in the past, according to which the highest number of complaints were filed in Feydhoo North constituency. Forty-four complaints were filed in Velidhoo constituency, two complaints in male' city constituency, followed by Gan, Dhandhoo, Gemanafushi and Kolamaafushi constituencies.

Eydhafushi, Thulhaadhoo, Kendhoo, Hithadhoo, Isdhoo, Maradhoo, Hithadhoo North, Hithadhoo Central, Hithadhoo South and Addu Meedhoo filed one complaint.

Parliament is required to elect members to 93 constituencies in 2024. The EC released the provisional report on the delimitation of constituencies on May 26. According to the report, parliament has added six constituencies.

The six areas added to 2024 are:

  • Hulhumale' Central Constituency
  • Hulhumale' North Constituency
  • Hithadhoo Constituency (Hithadhoo, Maalhos, Dharavandhoo)
  • Hura Constituency (Hura, Himmafushi, Gulhi)
  • Kolamafushi Constituency (Kolamafushi, Dhevvadhoo)
  • Feydhoo North Constituency (Feydhoo, Maradhuffedhoo)

With this change, Eydhafushi, Villingili and Meedhoo constituencies will have only one island belonging to the constituency, and the names of some constituencies have also been changed.

Similarly, Hulhumale' constituency has been renamed as Hulhumale' South constituency, Guraidhoo constituency as Maafushi constituency, Th. Guraidhoo constituency has been renamed as Guraidhoo constituency and Feydhoo as South Feydhoo constituency.
