Maldives Police Service has denied a news report stating that the government is planning attacks against some civil servants and expatriates in the Maldives.

In a statement issued on Thursday night, police said that they have not received any information about any plan to target government employees and foreign nationals living in the Maldives.

Police said in the statement that the person who posted the information on social media did not give any concrete reason to say that such information was received, and that they were unwilling to reveal their sources.

"Therefore, going by the manner in which this information was disseminated and the information and intelligence of the security services, it appears that this is an unfounded narrative spread to create panic and fear among the people without any basis and to achieve a political motive," police said.

Police has appealed to the people not to spread such fake news, not to spread panic and confusion among the people and not to indulge in such activities which may compromise the national interest.
