The trial hearing of the Fuggiri Corruption Case scheduled at the Criminal Court today has been canceled as the lawyers of the accused Sun companies had to appear for another trial today.
Former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom is facing money laundering and bribery charges in the Fuggiri lease deal. Ahmed Riza was charged with being a middleman in providing bribes and money laundering. while Sun Construction and Sun Investment have been charged with money laundering.
The state has temporarily withdrawn the part of Riza from the case due to his health concerns hindering the trial.
The court is scheduled to record the statements of two prosecution witnesses today. However, it was canceled as the defense lawyers could not appear.
"Today's hearing had to be called off as the defense lawyers of Sun companies were supposed to appear in another case and could not appear," Judge Ali Nadeem's section told One Online today.
A hearing was scheduled for Thursday to record the statements of two witnesses, however, the witness's testimonies were not taken that day either.
According to the Prosecutor General's (PG) Office, President Yameen had misused his official position and used Krik Riza as a medium to receive $1,117,000 in bribes and used Sun Construction and Engineering and Sun Investment to launder the money.
A total of $38,334,560 is trying to be recovered to the state in the case.
This includes $1,349,885 in fines, $2,295,250 collected from proceeds of crime, and $34,689,425 in fines.
