The process of re-registration for the upcoming Presidential Elections has begun today.
Election Commission President Fuwad Thaufeeq said the re-registration process was opened in two ways today. This includes online re-registration as well as the normal re-registration through the submission of application forms. This is the first time that online re-registration has been opened in a presidential election.
"We are opening the re-registrations via forms and via an online platform. The online portal will be just like any other portal, but a live photo will have to be given along with a photograph of his/her ID card. We will check if the information is authentic and re-register it," EC president Fuwad said on Thursday.
Fuwad said the re-registration will be open from today till August 5 for a period of 21 days. After that period, re-registrations will not be possible.
Fuad said that, unlike other times, anyone in Male', Villimale' and Hulhumale' can re-register at either of the three islands.
"Some people say that they are registered in Villimale', but want to vote in Hulhumale', this time it will be arranged, those living in Male' city can also vote in Villimale', and those living in Male' can also vote in Hulhumale' and so on. We will make the necessary arrangements to make it easy for voters," he said.
EC Vice President Ismail Habeeb said online re-registration will be allowed within the first two weeks. After that, re-registration will have to be done by submitting the required forms within the stipulated time.
Candidacy applications for this year's presidential elections will be from July 23 to August 7.
The first round of polling will be held on September 9. If the second round of elections is to be held, the second round of polling will be held on September 30.
