Jumhooree Party (JP) leader Qasim Ibrahim, has met with former Tourism Minister Ali Waheed.
Ali Wahed fled the United Kingdom after Maldives Police launched an investigation into sexual assault cases filed against him during his tenure as a Minister. Two years later he returned home last Tuesday. At the time of his return, the Prosecutor General's Office had withdrawn the charges against Ali Waheed.
The Supreme Court has also withdrawn a jail sentence against him for disrespecting the court after he had allegedly apologised to the court.
Qasim met Ali Waheed at Summer Island Resort today. In a video released by Jumhooree Party, he explained what was discussed at the meeting.
Qasim stated that everyone is aware that Ali Waheed had worked really hard during the challenges that arose during the Covid-19 pandemic. He alleged that Ali Waheed was cast aside after unverified reports and allegations were levied against him, however after realizing that all of this was untrue all charges against him have been withdrawn.
Encouraging Ali Waheed, he said that such things will happen at such a young age and that it will happen in the future. He said that the disappointments faced by him should not ruin his entire life. He also said that the Maldives needs people who think like Ali Waheed.
Ali Waheed said that Qasim was the biggest aid in his political career, adding that Qasim had helped him get elected to parliament in 2009 and also helped to get him appointed as the Tourism Minister.
