Former MDP President Mohamed Nasheed has joined newly formed The Democrats this evening.
The Democrats is a party founded by former MDP lawmakers supporting Nasheed. Nasheed was involved in the formation of the party and in shaping the party's policy and objectives.
Nasheed signed on to The Democrats at a special event held at Artificial Beach tonight.
He had stepped down from the post of MDP president on June 21st. In a letter to MDP Chairperson Fayyaz Ismail, Nasheed said that considering the current situation in the Maldives, he does not think that remaining in MDP was the right thing to do.
Although Nasheed signed on to The Democrats today, he has been involved in the party's activities since its inception. He has been actively advising on the party's policy and how the party's future should be shaped.
The Democrats will field a candidate in this year's presidential election, party sources had previously said. They further noted that a candidate will be decided by a primary.
