The Election Commission (EC) has registered 'The Democrats', led by Speaker of the Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed, and has included them in the list of political parties in the Maldives.
Vice President of the EC, Ismail Habib tweeted that the meeting of the commission held today unanimously approved the inclusion of The Democrats in the list of political parties as they had completed the formalities required for the registration of a political party.
The inaugural meeting of The Democrats was held on July 6 and the party's name, color, logo, and an interim chairperson were elected.
With the EC including The Democrats in the list of political parties, it will become a party that is also represented in the parliament. Opposition PPM will now lose the minority party's position in parliament and will be replaced by The Democrats which already has 13 parliamentarians:

2. North Galolhu MP Eva Abdulla
3. Central Henveiru MP Ali Azim
4. Maafannu North MP Imtiyaz Fahmy (Inthi)
5. Maafannu Central MP Ibrahim Rasheed (Bonde)
6. Kulhudhuffushi North MP Yasir Abdul Latheef
7. Ungoofaaru MP Mohamed Waheed (Wadde)
8. Thoddhoo MP Hassan Shiyan
9. Hulhudhoo MP Ilyas Labeeb
10. North Machangolhi MP Mohamed Rasheed
11. Villufushi MP Hassan Afeef
12. Madaveli MP Hussain Firshan
13. Gaddhoo MP Ahmed Zahir
In addition, the number is expected to rise up to 15, with Nasheed and Ahmed Rasheed expected to join soon.
