A barge has run aground near Fuvahmulah City reef.

Fuvahmulah City's mid-central Councilor Mohamed Fikry told 'One' on Friday night that the barge ran aground around 1430hrs on Friday. The barge belongs to Netherland's Hougaard company which has been contracted to build the sea wall to combat erosion.

"The barge likely ran aground after getting caught in the tidal waves. The company is currently working on getting the barge off the reef," Fikry said.

Videos and photos circulating social media shows the barge was carrying a large quantity of rock boulders.
