MFormer President Mohamed Nasheed has said that Former President, Abdulla Yameen indeed laundered money during his tenure.

Speaking during the campaign closing event for ‘Agenda 19’, President Nasheed said that President Yameen had revealed his plans of making a Free Trade Agreement with China early on, and added that the subsequent laws were passed through the parliament overnight.

President Nasheed stressed that during President Yameen’s tenure, Maldives had gained notoriety as a nation that was corrupt and committed to theft.

“He then brought in black money through foreign channels and diverted them through government institutions. He was deeply involved in laundering money. Several television stations across the world began broadcasting his dirty laundry. Al Jazeera and BBC had filled up airtime with the documentary Stealing Paradise and thus Maldives gained notoriety for being corrupt and laundering money,” President Nasheed highlighted.

He added that talks of corruption were openly talked, and accepted to among his lawmakers as well. This in turn had caused several issues in maintaining the sovereignty of the nation according to the former President.
