China has climbed to the fifth position of the Top Source Markets for Tourist Arrivals in the Maldives.

China ranked as the first top source market for tourist arrivals before the Covid-19 pandemic sent shockwaves through global travel. However, with loosening restrictions on travel in China, the number of Chinese tourist arrivals has also been increasing.

According to statistics published by the Ministry of Tourism, 64,341 Chinese tourist arrivals have been recorded in the year so far, which is a 6.9 percent share of the market. With this, China is now the fifth top source market for tourist arrivals.

China is one of the most vital markets for the tourism industry in the Maldives. The Maldives Marketing & PR Corporation (MMPRC) and Singapore Airlines had also conducted promotional campaigns in China last month, where the destination was promoted as a safe and interesting travel destination for Chinese nationals.

As per statistics, 934,317 tourist arrivals have been recorded in the year so far. India and Russia marks the top source markets for the year with over 100,000 arrivals from both countries. The United Kingdom comes in third with 80,497 arrivals recorded in the year.

The government aims to reach 1.9 million tourist arrivals in the year, as compared to the 1.6 million arrivals last year.
