The Elections Commission of the Maldives (EC) has greenlit the formation of a new party under the name 'The Democrats'.
The Democrats is being formed by supporters of Speaker of Parliament, Mohamed Nasheed.
Th EC previously granted a period of three months to submit 3,000 membership forms as required by the law. The party submitted 3,560 forms for registration on June 1st.
During the first meeting of the commission after processing the forms, it was decided that the formation of the party will not be approved. The decision was reached as two members of the EC who participated in the meeting had voted against the formation of the party.
EC President Ismail Habeeb revealed to One Online today that they have informed West Henveiru MP Hassan Latheef that the party has been greenlit.
Habeeb revealed that the decision to greenlight the formation of the party was unanimous.
The Democrats previously revealed that they will be contending at the upcoming Presidential Election.
