Former Vice President, Dr. Mohamed Jameel Ahmed has filed a case at the Supreme Court over his impeachment as the Vice President during President Abdulla Yameen’s administration.
In a tweet sent out on Thursday, Dr. Jameel said that he was impeached illegally, and that he has now filed a case at the Supreme Court. He added that while the impeachment process is clearly explained in the constitution, due process was not followed during the impeachment.
He added that Supreme Court’s verdict on the issue is essential to maintain the presidency according to the constitution. He stressed that a court verdict was essential to make sure that elected Presidents and Vice Presidents are not impeached through the parliament, with hefty bribes being poured into the pockets of lawmakers.
Dr. Jameel was impeached as the Vice President on 21 July 2015, after 78 lawmakers voted yes to the impeachment.
His impeachment was headed by majority leader, MP Ahmed Nihan, on the grounds that he was not working to the best of his abilities as a Vice President.
