President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Thursday appealed to cut down on water expenses.
Speaking during the event held in Hulhumale to begin water and sewerage works of Phase 2, the President highlighted the importance of using water provided by MWSC for drinking purposes.
He added that despite Maldives being surrounded by water, the scarcest thing in the country was clean water. He noted that the government spends a hefty amount to provide citizens with clean drinking water.
The President stressed that due to developmental works along with climate change has affected the natural water layers in our ground. He said that the issue was only going to get worse in the future.
“While we talk about protecting the environment, we are still using Diesel engines to desalinate water. We need to come up with methods that are environmentally friendly with less harmful consequences on the long run,” he added.
