North Galholhu MP Eva Abdulla has stated that the Elections Commission of the Maldives (EC) could not remain without registering The Democrats for too long.
The EC granted The Democrats a period of three months to submit the required number of forms for registration. The party submitted 3,560 forms on June 1st, however, registration works have not progressed much since.
Members of The Democrats had visited the EC over the delays in their registration.
Speaking to the members, EC Chairman Fuwad Thaufeeq noted that two members of the commission had voted against registering the party, hence they could not register the party. He revealed that the members who had voted against registering the party are Ali Nashath and Mohamed Asif.
Fuwad further added that the members did not detail what they wanted to further assess, highlighting that they had caused commotion before leaving which caused a tie in votes, due to which the party registration was not possible at the moment.
Protesting the decision of the EC, Eva stated that the ballot paper will include the name of the candidate of The Democrats. She further highlighted that the EC had commended The Democrats for their good work done in the submission of the forms.
She noted that the records at EC will show the praise The Democrats received over how smooth and complete the work on submitting the forms was, hence she added that there was no room to even delay the registration by one day.
