The Maldives has reopened its Embassy in Washington DC, USA.

Maldives Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid participated in the event to reopen the Embassy.

Communications between Maldives and the US before the reopening of the Embassy were held through the US embassy in Sri Lanka, or the Maldives Mission to the UN in New York.

However, President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih appointed Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed as the Ambassador of Maldives to the United States.

The decision to open the embassy came after then Secretary of State Mike Pompeo visited the Maldives in 2020.

Minister Shahid had also met with USAID Administrator Samantha Power during his trip to the US.

Maldives and the USA established diplomatic ties in 1966.

While the Embassy of Maldives has reopened in the USA, preparations are underway to open an Embassy of USA in the Maldives. The Embassy will be opened in the Umar Zahir Office Complex in Hulhumalé.
