Former President Abdulla Yameen has stated that being jailed was a painful ordeal.

He added that he was jailed for no reason and reiterated his innocence. The statement came during a campaign event for Ibrahim Faisal, running for Hulhumale Constituency from Peoples National Congress (PNC).

Speaking to the crowd through a phone call, the former President noted that certain political leaders were jailed during his administration for the crimes they had committed. He added that his jailing was an injustice since he was innocent.

He added that he was jailed as a last resort to silence his voice and highlighted that had his bank accounts not been frozen, PNC would have won a large number of seats at the Parliamentary Election.

President Yameen was sentenced to be remanded till the end of his trial where he was alleged of money laundering, by the criminal court. However, the high court overruled the verdict and set the leader free last month.

The court had also nullified the previous ruling to freeze President Yameen’s bank accounts.
