The Spokesperson at the President's Office, Miuvan Mohamed has stated that the no-confidence motion against Speaker of Parliament Mohmed Nasheed was submitted after MDP Parliamentary Group had discussions regarding it with President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.

When quizzed about the President's stand regarding the no-confidence motion during a press conference on Thursday, Miuvan noted that the President stands with the majority of the PG Group when it comes to such decisions.

He further noted that all the members of the PG group are able to discuss with the President regarding such issues, adding that the President always takes the side of the majority of the PG group.

MDP submitted the motion to the parliament administration with the signatures of 54 members.

This includes 50 members from MDP alongside Thulusdhoo MP Ibrahim Naseem, Kaashidhoo MP Abdulla Jabir, Nolhivaram MP Mohamed Nasheed, and Meedhoo MP Ahmed Siyam.

MDP Parliamentary Group consists of 56 members including Speaker Nasheed. They have not revealed the members who did not sign the motion yet.

According to the constitution, votes of half of the total number of parliament members are required to impeach the Speaker or Deputy Speaker of parliament. Hence, a total of 44 votes will be required to impeach Speaker Nasheed.

Speaking during a press meet, PG Group Leader and North Hithadhoo MP Mohamed Aslam noted that many members have been expressing concern over the current conduct of the Speaker.
