The Democrats have submitted 3,560 forms to the Elections Commission of the Maldives as part of the registration process of the party.

The party is being formed by supporters of Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, who lead the 'Fikuregge Dhirun' movement. 12 parliamentarians of MDP quit the party and sought permission to form a new party on May 21st, which was greenlit by the EC on May 24th.

The Elections Commission granted them a period of three months to submit 3,000 membership forms as mandated by the law.

West Henveiru MP Hassan Latheef submitted the required documents for registration, which were received by the Secretary General of the EC, Hassan Zakariyya.

Speaking to the press outside Dharubaaruge, Hassan Latheef noted that there are no issues with the forms that have been submitted today as they were individually verified by them. He further added that he had requested the EC to approve the registration at the soonest.

The Democrats had previously stated that they would be competing in the upcoming Presidential Election.
