Jumhooree Party (JP) Leader, Qasim Ibrahim has appealed to party members to refrain from participating in any demonstrations regarding the Chagos issue.

A coalition consisting of PPM, PNC, Maldives National Party, Umar Naseer, and Mohamed Munavvar is preparing to hold a rally regarding the issue this coming Friday. The rally is scheduled to be held at 8:30pm at the Artificial Beach area in Henveiru.

In a message sent to a WhatsApp group of JP, Qasim stated that members of JP are well aware of the intention of this rally, and what the consequences of it will be. Hence, he noted that the leadership of the party must abide by what the council of the party has recently decided.

Qasim also highlighted that in 2015, JP had not participated in the May Day rally organized by the opposition as well. He further stressed that in the case of the maritime boundary dispute, all works would be done with international experts.

While Qasim has stated this, Kendhoo MP Ali Hussain had previously represented JP at a meeting by the coalition.

A council meeting on May 25th had decided that if the party wins the upcoming presidential election, they would appeal the decision by International Tribunal for the Law of Seas (ITLOS).
