Ministry of Foreign Affairs have revealed that they have secured upto MVR 1.9 billion as free aid to the Maldives, during the Minister’s travels within the previous four months.

The Ministry noted that India had provided MVR 771 million in addition to a MVR 771 million by UAE. Apart from these, MVR 308 has also been provided by the United States.

During the visit by Indian External Affairs Minister to the Maldives during March, an additional MVR 100 million had also been provided. The Ministry noted that the free aid secured by the current government within the first 100 days was greater than the amount during the past five years.

They also noted that prior to this, there were various conditions in granting free aid such as loans and so on.

President Solih’s government strengthened ties with India at a time when it was strained. As a result of this, ease of visa and availability of certain construction and food items have been made easier.
