Australia opens High Commission in the Maldives

Australia has opened a High Commission in the Maldives, marking it a first for the country.

The decision to open an Australian High Commission in the Maldives was first announced in February 2022.

Announcing the opening of the new High Commission in the Maldives, a tweet from the High Commission of Australia in Sri Lanka noted that this will bring the friendship between both countries to new heights.

"Very pleased that a resident Australian High Commission is established in Male’ now. I remain assured that the close and cordial relations between Maldives and Australia will reach new heights following this milestone," Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid said in a tweet.

The High Commission is based on the fifth floor of Hotel Jen. Maldives and Australia established diplomatic ties in 1974.
