The Elections Commission of the Maldives (EC) on Wednesday greenlit the formation of 'The Democrats', a new political party being spearheaded by Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed.
Twelve members of Fikuregge Dhirun quit MDP and sought permission from the commission to form a new party last Thursday. The commission held a meeting regarding it today.
During a meeting with members of 'The Democrats', Vice President of the Commission Ismail Habeeb noted that the commission has approved the formation of the new party.
'The Democrats' will receive a three-month period to gain 3,000 members. After submitting the forms, they will then receive permission to host the inaugural meeting of the party. 300 members from the party are required to participate in this meeting.
During this meeting, the name of the party, basic policies, electing officials for permanent positions, and other related works will be carried out during this meeting. The commission should also be invited to the meeting.
Speaking during a press conference after the members had quit MDP, MP Ilyas Labeeb noted that the new party will produce a candidate to compete in the upcoming Presidential Election.
