Ruling Maldives Democratic Party (MDP) members have submitted a motion of no-confidence against Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla.

A member of the MDP Parliamentary Group revealed to One Online that they have submitted a no-confidence motion with the signatures of 50 members to the parliament.

The no-confidence motion comes at a time when 12 former parliamentarians of MDP including Eva had quit the party to form a new party under the name 'The Democrats'.

Since her departure from MDP, Eva has been quite vocal against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih and his government. MDP parliamentarians have also been accusing her of violating parliament regulations alongside Speaker Mohamed Nasheed, especially in how they conduct the parliament sessions.

According to the constitution, votes of half of the total number of parliament members are required to impeach the Speaker or Deputy Speaker of parliament. Hence, a total of 43 votes will be required to impeach Deputy Speaker Eva.

As per current standing, MDP has 55 members in the parliament.

While MDP parliamentarians are moving on a no-confidence motion against Eva, the opposition has already submitted no-confidence motions against Attorney General Ibrahim Riffath and Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid.

They are also working on an impeachment motion against President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih.
