Following the registration of the 12 members who resigned from MDP as independent members, number of the latter has risen to 17 in Parliament.

The 12 members belonging to MDP's 'Fikurehgge Dhirun' faction resigned from MDP last Wedesday.

Elections Commission informed of the member's resignation to parliament. However, the members were still granted time from MDP's time at the parliament session on Thursday.

MDP has since criticised Speaker Nasheed for allowing this.

Speaker Nasheed responded to the criticism saying that the members will need to submit formal letters to the parliament informing of their resignation from MDP.

Overseeing the parliament meeting on Monday, Deputy Speaker Eva Abdulla said the 12 members have submitted all necessary documentation to the parliament regarding their resignation from MDP.

"With this, MDP now has 55 members, PPM has 3 members, PNC has 3 members, MNP has 3 members, JP has 3 members, and the number of independent members stand at 17," Eva said.

Eva added that changes to the members time slot allocation will be informed to the members respectively and the changes to the committees will be submitted to the parliament for approval as well.
