Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Nasheed's Fikuregge Dhirun has submitted the registration form to the Elections Commission of the Maldives (EC) to form their new political party 'The Democrats'.

EC's approval for the party is being sought under Former MDP Chairperson and West Henveiru MP Hassan Latheef's name.

Most of the members who accompanied him to the EC today were wearing light blue ties while others donned blue shirts. This might be a potential hint that the color of the party will be blue; however, a logo and color for the party will be officially passed during the inaugural meeting of the party.

During the meeting held at the EC, Vice President Ismail Habeeb stated that if there are no issues with the forms submitted to form 'The Democrats', the permission could be granted as soon as this coming Wednesday.

While registration for 'The Democrats' has been submitted today, 12 former MDP parliamentarians are leading the party formation works. They resigned from MDP last Wednesday.

While Nasheed is heading the new party, he still remains in MDP.
