Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that it is certain that the MVR 100 million in former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom’s bank accounts are stolen and that it belongs to the Maldivian people.
President Nasheed said this while speaking at MDP campaign event for Haa Alif Kelaa constituency, held on the island last evening. He noted that the ruling by the Criminal Court to freeze the bank accounts of President Yameen has been overturned by the Maldives High Court today. He said that President Yameen claims that the MVR 100 million inside his bank accounts were for the purpose of the Presidential elections. President Nasheed pointed out however, that President Yameen has not used that amount even by the time the Presidential campaigns had concluded.
He said that while the High Court has claimed that the amount in the bank accounts has been released to President Yameen, it is important to raise the question as to how President Yameen acquired the money. President Nasheed reiterated that while it is common knowledge that donations to campaign efforts come with receipts, there is a need to raise the question as to who these donors were.
Former President Nasheed said that the funds acquired by President Yameen and transferred to his bank accounts were stolen. He said that the funds are without a doubt, stolen from the Maldivian people and as such, cannot be released back to President Yameen.
He said that the release of the funds cannot be allowed so that it can be used to give out bribes and violate laws set down in Islam. He noted as such, that the funds should enter only the State treasuries and nowhere else.
