Former President Mohamed Nasheed has said that the Supreme Court does not have the right to distribute State finances. He added that the Constitution does not allocate authorities for the Supreme Court to be able to extend their hands over State treasuries either.

President Nasheed said this while speaking regarding the Supreme Court ruling on handing over MVR 200 million in the place of handing over certain islands. As such, the company World Link Travels (WLT) was to initially be handed certain islands. Villa Companies has a share in World Link Travels (WLT).

President Nasheed said this while speaking at an event at Madifushi, held as part of the campaign of Parliamentary hopeful for the Vilufushi constituency, Hassan Afeef. He said that the Supreme Court is completely mistaken on the assembling of the State and added that the Supreme Court has no powers over State treasuries.

The former President reiterated that the Supreme Court has handed out MVR 450 million of State finances within the past month to various entities. He said that State finances do not belong to the State as it is taken through the taxpayers.

He said that the State budget for 2019 has already been passed and added that MVR 450 million has not been allocated in the State budget for Qasim Ibrahim.

He said that even the President of Maldives or the government have no authority over finances that are not allocated in the State budget. As such, President Nasheed said that the Supreme Court has no powers over the distribution of State finances.
