Maldives Food and Drug Authority (MFDA) has issued an alert over a cough syrup for children.

MFDA's statement issued on Tuesday said the alert was issued following an alert by World Health Organisation (WHO) over the amount of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol in Guaifenesin TG syrup.

WHO had issued such alerts previously on various cough syrups produced in India.

MFDA said Guaifenesin is not authorised for import or sale in the Maldives, however, to remain vigilant on the issue.
