Parliament Committee on Independent Institutions has voted to pass a Bill on an amendment to the Presidential Elections Act which seeks to extend the candidacy application window.

Kelaa Member of Parliament (MP) Ibrahim Shareef sponsored the Bill on behalf of the government.

The Bill seeks an amendment to Clause 5 (A) of the Presidential Elections Act which states that the Elections Commission should give a period of not less than 10 days for the persons wishing to stand for the presidential election to submit to the Elections Commission their applications.

The amendment seeks to change this duration to a total of 14 days.

The Bill will now be sent to the Parliament floor.
