Salaries for nurses have been increased up to MVR 41,000.
President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih announced increments to the salaries of healthcare workers in a national address on Sunday.
The President noted that Senior Registered Nurses previously received MVR 20,459 with the inclusion of overtime allowance, though with the change they will receive MVR 29,271 without overtime allowance. Specialist Nurses will now receive MVR 41,976.
President Solih further highlighted that a Medical Officer received MVR 28,727 with overtime allowance, though with the change they will receive 41,541 without overtime allowance. In addition to this, the highest tier of Sub-Specialist Consultants will receive a salary of MVR 98,137 without overtime allowance.
The President described the biggest challenge of the health sector as the lack of interested Maldivians. He highlighted that it was rather difficult to recruit specialists, nurses, allied health professionals and mental health professionals.
The increment of health sector professionals' salaries was a presidential pledge of President Solih.
